CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES

A hat that earns its place in your bag.

Choose a packable sun hat by head size, brim shape, neck coverage and folding instructions. Compare practical travel fit before ordering a particular style.

A useful travel hat needs to fit your head, suit your day and survive the packing method its manufacturer recommends. Start there before choosing by a product photo.

Measure fit and consider your usual accessories

Check your head measurement against the product’s size chart. An adjustable closure can fine-tune fit, but it does not make every size interchangeable. Think about your hairstyle, sunglasses and the way a backpack sits behind your shoulders.

If possible, try the hat while wearing the other items you normally use. Turn your head and look up and down. The useful result is that the hat stays comfortable and does not obstruct your view during the activities you expect.

Compare the brim and the back of the hat

A cap, a wide brim and a neck cape offer different shapes and coverage. Decide which arrangement suits your walking, sightseeing or outdoor plans. Consider whether a chinstrap is useful to you and whether it has a convenient place to sit when unused.

The Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Hat in our catalog has a listed 3½-inch brim and a 6-inch neck cape. That is a particular design to compare, not a claim that it is the right style for every traveler.

Follow the actual packing instructions

“Packable” can mean folding a specific part, laying the hat flat or placing it carefully at the top of a bag. It does not mean every hat can be rolled or crushed. Read the instructions for the exact model before using the packing method that suits your backpack.

The Ultra Adventure Hat has a brim designed to fold for compact packing. We have not tested long-term creasing, packed durability or how it feels in different conditions, so our assessment leaves those as open questions.

A short shortlist checklist

Manufacturer fabric ratings and design claims should be read in context. This is a gear-selection guide, not a medical assessment or a guarantee of complete sun protection.

  • Correct size from the manufacturer’s measurement chart.
  • Brim and neck coverage suited to your actual plans.
  • Comfort with sunglasses and the backpack you will wear.
  • A folding method that fits your bag.
  • Care instructions you can follow during the trip.

A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS

Before you pack

Can I crush every packable sun hat into a backpack?

No. Follow the exact model’s instructions. Some hats fold at a designed point; others should be packed flat or kept from creasing.

Should I choose a neck cape or a wide brim?

Compare both with your activities, fit and packing needs. A cape changes rear coverage and appearance; it is not automatically the most comfortable choice for everyone.
